WHAT IS PLANTATION AGRICULTURE?


Plantation agriculture is a form of large scale commercial farming that specializes in cash crops such as
cocoa, coffee, tea, cotton, sugar cane, oil palm, rubber, apple, banana, orange, grape, pawpaw, pineapple etc. are grown for profit. It requires a large expanse of land, huge capital, tool, implement and machinery, highly qualified skilled and unskilled labourers, a working irrigation and drainage system, and proper management.

Plantation agriculture is common in countries that have tropical climate with high annual temperatures and high annual level of rainfall, also proper irrigation system could be in place to supplement rainfall or in case of drought.

There is always a plantation house which is the main house of the plantation which serves the entire plantation by housing the seat of management, safekeeping of farm tools and implement and in the real sense can house a processing factory for the particular product being produced serving as raw materials at close quarters in case of An industrial plantation.

A whole lot of agricultural practices and processes are being carried out; from selection, land preparation, nursery, planting, thinning or supplying, pruning, weeding, harvesting, processing, storage, transportation and marketing.
